Woman Exasperated by Man Who Cannot Wait to Be Ignored

Both occupants consented to measurement. Neither was told which of them was being measured, and each has assumed it was the other.

A household in the county has entered its fourth week of a condition the Institute for Domestic Timing classifies as an exasperation deadlock, in which one occupant requires the other to fail to notice him, and the other has proven unable to fail to notice him at the necessary speed.

The mechanism is documented and is not in dispute. The man sighs. The sigh is performed in a doorway, at a measured distance from the room’s occupied chair, and runs between 1.8 and 2.4 seconds. It is not a request for attention. It is a request for the absence of attention, which is the only form of attention that confirms the grievance he has prepared. The sigh must therefore be heard and not acknowledged, in that order, within a window the Institute measures at four seconds.

The window has not been met. The woman, who has heard every sigh since the practice began, acknowledges him. Acknowledgement voids the grievance. The man must then withdraw to the hallway and begin again, and the Institute notes that each restart lengthens the sigh by an average of 0.3 seconds, as the accumulated evidence of being noticed requires a correspondingly larger demonstration of not being.

“He is not trying to be heard,” a researcher attached to the study said. “He is trying to be overlooked in a manner that can later be cited. Those are different needs and only one of them can be met by speaking to him.”

The woman’s position has been recorded separately and is procedurally distinct. She is exasperated not by the sighing, which she describes as ambient and long since absorbed into the sound of the house, but by the requirement that she produce a silence she is not being told she is producing. She has asked, twice, what he wants. Both occasions were fatal to the exercise.

The deadlock is now self-supplying. Her exasperation is itself legible from the doorway, which means the man can be overlooked in relation to it, which produces a further sigh, which she hears. The Institute has modelled the loop and reports that it requires no external input and shows no tendency to settle. A colleague described it as the only observed system in the county that runs entirely on being witnessed.

Mediation was attempted on the ninth day and abandoned on the same afternoon. The mediator, having been briefed in the kitchen, entered the front room, said nothing, and was thanked.

The Institute for Domestic Timing has not previously been cited by this paper. Its earlier work on the interval between a door closing and a comment about the door closing remains unpublished and, the Institute says, ongoing.
