Hybrid Car Changes Fuel Classification Depending on Which Subsidy Counter It Approaches

The vehicle qualifies as electric on arrival and petrol-powered when referred to the adjoining desk.

An engineer and an official inspect a car battery beside a petrol can in a garage.

A new hybrid car has been certified to change its fuel classification according to the support available at the counter in front of it, giving motorists a practical way to navigate the transition between competing transport policies. The manufacturer says the system combines an electric motor, a petrol engine and an up-to-date understanding of which department is paying.

On approaching a clean-vehicle desk, the car presents itself as an electric vehicle with supplementary range provision. At a fuel-relief counter it becomes a petrol car carrying an unusually large electrical accessory. The transition occurs without driver intervention, although owners must confirm that the car is not currently describing itself differently to another authority.

‘Customers wanted the confidence to make a long journey without knowing what the policy would be when they got there,’ a company spokesperson said. ‘This model can complete the entire trip between a purchase incentive and an exemption using only the resources already on board. In most cases the driver will not notice the classification changing.’

During a demonstration, the vehicle traveled silently to the low-emissions window, where an official admired its battery. Referred twelve feet to a desk dealing with household fuel costs, it started its engine. The second official said this was precisely the kind of necessary petrol journey the relief scheme had been designed to support.

A dashboard display shows remaining eligibility in place of the usual efficiency score. A green bar indicates that the next benefit can be reached electrically; amber means supporting paperwork may be required. If the bar turns red, drivers are advised to stop somewhere safe and wait for a consultation to close.

Owners must retain enough charge to demonstrate environmental commitment and enough petrol to establish that they have incurred a cost. Using either supply completely can leave the vehicle stranded between definitions. Roadside assistance includes a portable charger, a fuel can and an adviser authorized to explain the difference between a grant and a rebate.

Regulators said the classifications were individually correct. A car may be electric for parking, petrol-powered for hardship and neither for a program that has exhausted its allocation. An application to recognize the administrative distance traveled between these positions is being considered separately from the vehicle's mileage.

The owner's manual recommends keeping receipts in the glove compartment and the charging cable visible through the rear window. At resale, buyers will receive the service history and a sealed envelope containing the car's position under the current rules. The envelope should be opened only after the new keeper has found a pen.
