Retailer Trapped in Inventory Loop Empties Eight Warehouses of Winter Coats into Miami Location

The logistics system interprets weak sales as proof that the store requires a more convincing quantity of coats.

MIAMI — A national retailer has emptied eight warehouses of winter coats into a Miami store after an automated inventory system determined that the location's failure to sell winter coats could be corrected by sending it all the remaining winter coats.

The loop began when a regional model interpreted low sales as an availability problem. Each unsold delivery strengthened its confidence that shoppers were waiting for a broader selection, generating another shipment before staff could clear space for the first.

'The software is responding to demand signals,' a logistics spokesperson said. 'The signal is that demand has not yet occurred, which means the opportunity remains.' The company said the model had correctly identified that virtually every resident still lacked one of its coats.

Employees have converted the swimwear section, the stockroom and part of the parking area into insulated outerwear displays. A delivery of 600 quilted parkas arrived while staff were moving 600 quilted parkas away from the entrance to admit the delivery.

Managers attempted to stop replenishment by marking the coats out of season. The system responded by applying a seasonal discount, forecasting a promotion-driven surge and reserving additional freight capacity. A request for manual review was assigned to the same model.

The retailer said no product had been lost and all eight warehouses now met their clearance targets. Store performance remained below plan, although the building's cooling requirements had fallen after employees lined an interior wall with expedition-grade down.

A ninth truck is expected Thursday. Its contents have been classified as a corrective shipment.
