Queen Mary 3 Completes Maiden Crossing With 41 of Its 2,690 Passengers Still Aboard
Every cabin on the new liner can detach and fly ahead at twice the speed of sound, which the operator says has removed the last reason for a family to stay on holiday together.

Queen Mary 3 arrived in New York on Thursday after a six-day crossing from Southampton with 41 of the 2,690 passengers who boarded, a figure the operator described as in line with projections. The rest had detached their cabins somewhere over the Atlantic and flown ahead, gone home, or rejoined the ship at a later point with different luggage.
Each of the liner's 1,345 staterooms is registered as a light aircraft and may leave the superstructure through a docking bay on Deck Nine, reaching Mach 2 once it has cleared the funnels. A cabin carries its own bathroom, minibar and flight plan. The brochure lists the arrangement under amenities rather than safety equipment.
Passengers may depart with an hour's notice, or with none by lifting a small clear cover on the bedside panel marked Already. Family suites are two connected cabins that can separate. The Maritime and Aviation Liaison Office classifies a separated suite as one household for customs purposes and two for the purposes of who has the toothbrush.
"Our guests told us the best moment of any cruise is when you realise you could leave," a spokesperson for the operator said. "We have made that moment available at sea, at any hour. Dinner is still served at eight for anyone who is there."
The crossing recorded 312 unscheduled departures in its first 24 hours. The operator said most were made to confirm that a garage door had been closed, and that the average cabin returned three hours and ten minutes later with the door confirmed and a second pair of headphones.
The dining rooms remain the only part of the ship that cannot detach. Stewards report that departures fall sharply in the 20 minutes before a fresh tray of roast potatoes is due, and the operator now posts the carvery schedule beside the departure board so that passengers can plan international travel around it.
Fares include unlimited departures, but each return to the ship is billed as a separate port call. A family of four from Leeds was invoiced on Wednesday for arriving in Lisbon, at the ship and in their own driveway within the same afternoon. The operator said the invoice was correct and that the driveway had been charged at the domestic rate.
Port officials in New York said the ship's arrival had been processed normally, apart from 17 cabins that docked at the pier ahead of the vessel and waited there with their engines idling. "A room that arrives before its ship is treated as unaccompanied baggage," a port authority spokesperson said. "It may be collected on presentation of the ship."
Queen Mary 3 sails for Southampton on Sunday at 4 p.m. The operator asks passengers to confirm which cabin holds their passports before boarding and notes that the ship will leave at the published time regardless of how many of its rooms are attached.
