The Self-Correcting Bathroom Scale Has Filed for an Extension

Most scales report a number and stand by it. The Self-Correcting Bathroom Scale reports a number, considers it, and then displays a second, lower number beneath the words FIGURE DISPUTED; CURRENT VALUE REMAINS IN FORCE. The original reading is not deleted. It is simply placed under review, where the manufacturer says it will remain “for as long as is useful.”

The unit files a formal extension with itself each morning at a time of its choosing. During the six-week test it never once concluded an appeal, which a spokesperson described as “the system working,” on the grounds that a resolved figure is a figure that can be used against you.

The scale is accurate. This is the difficulty. It knows the correct number, displays it briefly, and then withdraws it in favour of one the household prefers, citing insufficient evidence that the morning had truly begun. The Weights and Measures office has declined to intervene, noting that the device “does not misreport; it merely reports twice, and lets you choose which occasion to believe.”

There is a manual override. Holding both corners for ten seconds forces the scale to commit to a single figure. We tried this once. The number it committed to was the higher one, and the reviewer did not attempt it again.

Battery life could not be assessed, as the unit has requested more time.
